Secure Shell, also known as SSH, is a cryptographic network protocol used to execute commands on a remote hosting server or to exchange information between a hosting server and a client. Due to the fact that the data exchanged by the two sides is encrypted, a third party simply cannot intercept it, which makes SSH a favored means of managing an Internet hosting account. The commands which can be executed depend on the type of hosting service. On a shared web server, for instance, the choices are limited as you simply won't have root access to the web server, so you may just create/move/delete files, create and unpack archives, import and export databases, etcetera. They are all actions that are carried out within the shared hosting account and don't need a higher level of access. Through a virtual or a dedicated server, you'll have the ability to install server-side software or to restart the machine or only a specific service (web server, database server, etc.). SSH commands are submitted with a command line, and if you don't use a UNIX-like Operating System, there are tons of applications for other OSs, which you can use to connect to the remote hosting server as well.

In case you have a hosting account with our company and you want to deal with your content remotely using SSH, you may receive SSH access to the account via your Hepsia Control Panel. If your package doesn't offer this feature by default, you can add it with a couple of clicks via the Upgrades menu. Within the SSH section of the Control Panel, you'll see the host, the port number and the username that you need to use when you connect to the account. You can also select what password you want to use, considering that it does not have to be the same as the one for the account. Furthermore, if SSH access is enabled for your account, you shall be able to establish a Secure FTP (SFTP) connection via a standard client like FileZilla, for instance.

If you have a semi-dedicated server account with our company, you'll be able to receive SSH access to it with only a mouse click from the corresponding section of the Hepsia hosting CP, provided with all accounts. If your package does not support this function by default, you'll be able to add it without difficulty through the Upgrades menu. When you go to the SSH section, you shall find the information that you need to connect to the server via a command line or a desktop app - the server/host, the port number, the username and the password. The latter may be updated anytime, when required. These login credentials are also needed if you want to upload files via a secure connection and you wish to use SFTP, which is also part of the SSH access service that we offer you. You shall be able to use SSH to handle your content irrespective of which VPS servers you choose when you sign up, as all our packages provide this feature by default.
